Source: Bruins Listening But Hesitant On Krug Trade

A well-placed NHL source told BostonHockeyNow early Friday afternoon, that “multiple teams” have inquired with Don Sweeney regarding the availability of defenseman Torey Krug who is entering the final season of a four-year, $21 million contract ($5.25 million cap hit) signed on June 30, 2016. However, as Sweeney told the media this past Monday, he has been hesitant to take any trade talks regarding Krug past the exploratory stage because “it’s going to take a pretty unique opportunity” for him to seriously consider trading the backbone of the team’s power play and a player that has become “part of that next wave of leadership” and “an important part of our club”.

“There’s teams calling Don on Krug for sure,” the source told BostonHockeyNow. “He’s letting them know though, it’s going to cost a hell of a lot to pry him from Boston. His first goal is to sign Torey but obviously, he has to do some cap maneuvering and it’s just a matter of he wants to take a chance he has to let him walk next summer.”

For now, Sweeney is simply listening to any offers for Krug and it appears that unless a knock your socks off type deal comes his way and he simply can’t refuse it, he will address his internal restricted free agent situation and then see where he’s at cap wise after before trying to either iron out an extension with Krug – who has made it clear he’d like to stay with the Bruins – or start to listen in earnest to trade offers coming his way.

Krug had 16 assists and 18 points in 24 playoff games for the Bruins and finished the regular season with 47 helpers and 53 points.
