BHN Puck Links: Boston Bruins Will Host Another Fenway Winter Classic

The NHL enjoyed the Boston Bruins hosting the Winter Classic at Fenway Park so much that they’re headed back to the Lyric Little Bandbox.

After reports had surfaced in recent days that the Winter Classic was indeed headed back to Fenway in an outdoor game between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed while addressing the media at NHL All-Star weekend that the 2023 Winter Classic will be played on Lansdowne Street on New Year’s Day.

The opponent remains to be announced, but the Penguins would make a ton of sense. The 2023 Winter Classic will mark the first time that the NHL has returned to a Winter Classic site for a second time in the 15-year history of the outdoor game

“It’s been 12 years since we went to Fenway. A lot of money has been put into the building. It’s not quite the same ballpark. Boston is obviously a great hockey town,” said Bettman, who added that the NHL was bound to repeat an outdoor venue after playing 30 outdoor games that started with the Winter Classics.

Interestingly enough, the Penguins make perfect sense as the opponent since the Fenway Sports Group led by Red Sox Principal owner John Henry purchased majority ownership of the Pittsburgh hockey club earlier this season.

The game will mark the fifth NHL regular-season outdoor game for the Bruins and the first at Fenway since the Black and Gold defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in OT in the 2010 NHL Winter Classic, with Marco Sturm memorably scoring in overtime to lift the bruins to victory.

Now on to the BHN Puck Links:

*The Boston Bruins still have plenty of questions to answer at the midway mark of the season, but at the very least they’re going to be a playoff team once again. (Boston Hockey Now)

*Tom Wilson got some friendly advice from Zdeno Chara about what to expect during NHL All-Star weekend. (Washington Hockey Now)

*The Flyers are asking their fans for feedback about their Wells Fargo Arena experience for home dates with the Broad Street Bullies. (Philly Hockey Now)

*Trevor Zegras is a ridiculous hockey highlight reel machine.

*What an awful injury to Team USA forward and emotional leader Brianna Decker on a play that looked a lot like a dirty slewfoot to me. (Pucks with Haggs)

*Kind of a bummer that New York Islanders defenseman Zdeno Chara politely declined an invitation to NHL All-Star weekend for the hardest shot competition. But totally understandable given the vacations these NHL players plan with their families at the NHL All-Star break. (Sportsnet)

*Congrats to the pride of Stoneham, Mass Sam Colangelo tearing it up for Northeastern in a win over UVM on Friday night.

*For something completely different: Interesting to hear the other side of Olympic-level athletes that never quite make it that far when the Olympic games are in season. (NBC)
