BHN Puck Links: Zito Shakes Up More Than The NHL Trade Market

Florida Panthers defenseman Keith Yandle was scheduled to be in the lineup when the Panthers host the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday but there’s more on how new Panthers General Manager Bill Zito didn’t just shake up the NHL trade market but may have negatively affected the team culture.

Will the Boston Bruins ever score a 5-on-5 goal this season?

Could the Edmonton Oilers be scouring the local beer leagues for goalies soon?

When and how much will AHLers finally be paid?

That and more in your BHN puck links!

The Florida Panthers shook up the NHL Trade market this past week with their mishandling of the Keith Yandle situation. Yes, they remedied things for the short term but the belief is Yandle will be dealt with sooner rather than later. The bigger issue going forward could be repairing the culture within the organization after treating a well-respected veteran leader with hardly any respect and also the image of that culture for future Panthers.

Also, in the latest ‘Off The Record,’ there’s some speculation that the Buffalo Sabres may try to acquire Vegas Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. (Boston Hockey Now

The Boston Bruins have scored two powerplay goals and a shorthanded goal but no even-strength goals through the first two games of the 2021 season. What can they do to light the lamp 5-on-5? My Irish Law Firm partner Joe Haggerty searches for answers. (Boston Hockey Now)

With Edmonton Oilers goalie Mike Smith on the shelf, Mikko Koskinen struggling, and his back-up Stuart Skinner having no NHL experience, Oilers GM Ken Holland has been scouring the NHL trade, free agency, and waivers markets for help between the pipes. He’s even looked into some local amateur leagues. On Sunday, he may have found an NHL solution though as the Toronto Maple Leafs waived veteran back-up goalie Aaron Dell. (Edmonton Journal

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Pittsburgh Penguins are exploring the NHL Trade market for a defenseman and they’ve circled back on disgruntled Winnipeg Jets rearguard Jack Roslovic. (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

AHL players have not been paid since last April and as Larry Brooks writes, there’s no telling when and how much they will be paid going forward. To say the situation is dire in the NHL’s top developmental league would be an understatement. Some AHLers can’t even make rent right now and are being forced to pack into apartments with teammates in similar situations increasing the chance of COVID not only infecting them but an entire team. Finally, I forgot to do a Murph’s Music Pick of the day on Friday so I’ll give you two today.

A good friend of mine, Dave Barton is the front man and a guitarist for the Celtic Punk band The Peelers. Was going back and forth with Dave on Facebook messenger the past 12 hours and just discussing how much we miss live music. Even though I’m a Liverpool fan and he’s a Manchester United fan, I love him and you will love The Peelers!

Finally, some tough news for Dave, myself, and any other Specials fans as the band announced Friday that they’re done. One of my favorite bands ever and the definition of Ska! Thanks for the music lads!
