Milan Lucic will be back in an NHL dressing room this season.

The former Boston Bruins forward signed a professional tryout contract with the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, returning to the league for the first time since his arrest for assault and battery nearly two years ago.

Lucic, 37, last appearance in the NHL came with the Bruins during the 2023-24 season, when he played in four games before allegedly attempting to choke his wife.

According to a report by the Boston Police Department, officers responded to a call at Lucic’s home on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023. Upon the officer’s arrival, Lucic appeared to be intoxicated. Brittany Lucic told the responding officers that Lucic pulled her hair but did not attempt to choke her. She declined an offer to receive medical attention at the scene.

Lucic was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court three days later, where he pled not guilty and was released on personal recognizance bail. The charges against Lucic were eventually dropped in February after Brittany Lucic invoked marital privilege and refused to testify.

Soon after Lucic’s arrest, it announced that he would seek treatment through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program and take an indefinite leave of absence from playing for the Bruins. The team later let his contract expire on June 30 and did not try to re-sign him that offseason.

Lucic has appeared in 1,177 games across his 17-year NHL career for the Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames, scoring 586 points with 233 goals.

He was drafted by the Bruins in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and won the Stanley Cup as part of the team in 2011.
