Whatever sense of optimism the Boston Bruins built with two highly emotional wins following the NHL trade deadline was burst on Thursday night at Canadian Tire Center, where they fell 6-3 to the Ottawa Senators.

It all started with a first period that quickly went from bad to worse for the Bruins.

Ottawa had six of the game’s first seven shots on net, one of which came off the stick of Shane Pinto and flew through Jeremy Swayman’s legs to open the scoring for the Sens 3:44 into the game.

After the Senators added to their lead with a goal from Tyler Kleven, Casey Mittlestadt responded for Boston with his first goal as a member of the Bruins and 12th of the season.

The Bruins by no means had played well to that point, but at least

That all changed, though, when the Senators scored a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart.

A questionable interference penalty on Johnny Beecher opened the door for a power play goal from Drake Batherson. Ottawa then scored again off the ensuing face-off with a goal from Ridley Greig after Swayman misplayed the puck behind his own net.

Overall, it was a poor night for Swayman as he finished with just 11 saves on 15 shots and was pulled at the beginning of the second period with the Bruins trailing 4-1.

David Pastrnak helped cut into that deficit when he deflected in a shot from Beecher past Linus Ullmark for his 34th goal of the season.

Batherson pushed Ottawa’s lead back to three with his second goal of the night before Marat Khusnutdinov scored his first Bruins goal to make it 5-3.

Mason Lohrei had about as good of a chance as one could hope for to draw Boston within one in the third period, set to shoot at a wide-open cage from the right face-off circle. But just as he had done while with the Bruins so many times before, Ullmark threw himself across the crease, stretching his glove out to stop Lohrei with what may go down as the save of the year across the entire league.

The score held until there were less than two minutes remaining in the game when Claude Giroux buried the Bruins for good with an empty net goal. Korpisalo finished the night with 15 saves on 16 shots.

The loss drops the Bruins’ record to 30-29-8. They remain two points out of the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference standings with only 15 games remaining on their schedule.

The Bruins will return home to TD Garden on Saturday night to host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
