The injuries continue to pile up for the Boston Bruins, with Brad Marchand now the latest.

Marchand exited Saturday afternoon’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena and did not return with an upper-body injury. Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco did not have an update on Marchand’s status following the Bruins 3-2 win.

The injury occurred early in the first period.  As Marchand went to retrieve the puck in the corner, Penguins defenseman P.O. Joseph hit him from behind and pinned him against the boards.

Following the hit, Marchand laid prone on the ice, face down and slow to move. He eventually made it back to his feet but was helped off the ice by a teammate and team trainer. Joseph was not assessed a penalty for the hit.

“It’s never good to lose your captain, especially a player like Marchy, who never lays on the ice,” David Pastrnak said. ” That not being called a penalty, that’s crazy to me. I thought it was a hit from behind. A player got injured, a guy like Marchy, who is pretty tough. Hopefully, he’s going to be alright and he’ll be back soon enough because he’s a big part of our group.”

Marchand, 36, is the team’s second-leading scorer with 47 points through 60 games this season. An unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, he’s also one of the top targets on the NHL trade market ahead of the trade deadline on March 7.

The Bruins already have defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm on the shelf for the foreseeable future, as well as forward Trent Frederic. A Marchand absence of any sort is the absolute last thing they need as they struggle to stay alive in the Eastern Conference wildcard race.

After improving their record of 28-25-8 by beating the Penguins, the Bruins snapped a five-game losing streak and now sit two points back of a playoff spot.

The Bruins will visit the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Sunday afternoon. Sacco will provide an update on Marchand’s status before the game.
