4 Nations Face-Off
Brad Marchand Burns Tkachuk Brothers Following 4 Nations Championship Win

BOSTON — Throughout the entirety of the 4 Nations Face-Off, Matthew and Brady Tkachuk did what they do best: play hard on the ice and talk trash off of it.
But when it was all said and done, it was Brad Marchand who had the last laugh after Team Canada defeated Team USA in overtime on Thursday night at TD Garden to win the 4 Nations championship.
“The Tkachuk brothers–they play their game, and they do what they do. Sometimes, when you shoot your mouth off in the media, it bites you,” Marchand said. “You can do that during the season. But when you’re playing best-on-best, it’s different. They got a little bit ahead of themselves.”

The Tkachuks made their presence felt early and often in the tournament.
When the U.S. and Canada met in the round-robin stage last Saturday in Montreal, both got into a fight within the game’s first nine seconds–as did J.T. Miller–stoking the already simmering rivalry between the two countries.

“The message we wanted to send is, ‘It’s our time right now,'” Matthew Tkachuk said following a 3-1 win for the Americans at Bell Center.
The fireworks in Montreal set the stage for a highly anticipated rematch in the championship game in Boston.
After Canada opened the scoring, Brady Tkachuk answered back for the United States. With the game tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, Connor McDavid scored the championship-clinching goal for Canada at the 8:18 mark of overtime.

“This tournament is going to be talked about for a long time, and you really can’t describe how much it means,” Marchand said. “Obviously, it means a ton to the entire country. We know the importance of these games and these tournaments to our friends, our families, our country, Hockey Canada, and what it means to hockey all across Canada. That’s the pressure that you invite and that you want. You cherish being part of this group.”
Marchand finished the tournament with a goal and five shots on net while averaging 11:35 of ice time per game. After winning the 4 Nations Face-Off, he now has won six gold medals while representing Canada over the course of his hockey career.
But even though the tournament is over, Marchand has not seen the last of the Tkachuks. With Matthew playing for the Florida Panthers and Brady serving as the captain of the Ottawa Senators, both brothers will be a major obstacle for Marchand and the Boston Bruins as they make a push for the playoffs.
“They’re great players,” said Marchand. “There are not many guys in the league who play the way they do, and they’re extremely effective. But when you start giving teams ammo, it can work against you as well.”
