4 Nations Face-Off
WATCH: Charlie McAvoy Inspires Team USA Ahead of 4 Nations Face-Off Final

BOSTON — Charlie McAvoy isn’t able to play for Team USA tonight in the 4 Nations Championship game against Team Canada. But there was no way he was missing it.
Fresh out of the hospital, McAvoy was visibly emotional in the U.S. dressing room as he read out the team’s starting lineup ahead of the highly anticipated winner-take-all contest.

The Boston Bruins defenseman injured his shoulder during the opening game of the tournament for the U.S. against Finland last Thursday in Montreal. The injury was thought to be minor at the time, and McAvoy played in the following game that Saturday against Canada after receiving treatment from Team USA’s medical staff.
However, McAvoy’s pain increased over the following days, and he was eventually admitted to Mass General Hospital late Monday night after a series of tests performed by the Bruins medical staff revealed that his injury developed an infection and was far worse than originally believed.
According to a statement from Bruins team physician Dr. Peter Asnis, McAvoy underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure while in the hospital and was treated with IV antibiotics. McAvoy was released from the hospital prior to the game on Thursday and was seen at TD Garden with his right arm in a sling.
McAvoy was one of the first players selected to the Team USA roster and played a pivotal role for the team, logging heavy defensive minutes against some of the best competition in the world while earning high praise from his peers in the process.
But even after the 4 Nations tournament concludes and Team USA disbands, McAvoy still has a long way to go before he’s back on the ice.
Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco said on Wednesday there is no timetable for his return.
In 50 games for the Bruins this season, McAvoy has tallied 23 points with seven goals while logging the most minutes of any skater on the team.
