Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was not in the lineup for Team USA on Monday night and won’t be for the championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off on Thursday against Team Canada either.

McAvoy was admitted to Mass General Hospital on Monday to treat an upper-body injury. The Bruins issued the following statement Tuesday morning:

“Charlie was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday to undergo testing related to an upper-body injury sustained during the 4 Nations Face-Off and is currently being evaluated by Boston Bruins Head Team Physician Dr. Peter Asnis. He will not play for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game on Thursday at TD Garden. The Boston Bruins will provide further updates on his condition and status as soon as they become available.”

McAvoy played well for the U.S. through the first two games of the 4 Nations tournament and received high praise from many of his peers before suffering the injury. Losing McAvoy for the championship game is a massive blow for the Americans, who also have several other players dealing with injuries.

Auston Matthews (soreness) and Matthew Tkachuk (lower body) both missed the game on Monday against Sweden. Brady Tkachuk started the game for the U.S. but only logged 1:55 of time on ice after he, too, suffered a lower-body injury and sat out the rest of the night after crashing into the net during the first period.

A new report from Emily Kaplan of ESPN says that both Tkachuks intend to play on Thursday versus Canada.

As big as McAvoy’s absence is for Team USA, it’ll be even more so for the Bruins if he remains out beyond the conclusion of the 4 Nations tournament. The defenseman has tallied 23 points with seven goals through 50 games for the Bruins this season while logging the most minutes of any skater on the team.

Boston sits one point back of the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 27-24-6 and will resume its schedule Saturday night at home against the Anaheim Ducks.
