BOSTON — Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was admitted to Mass General Hospital on Monday with an upper-body injury, according to a report from Jim McBride of The Boston Globe.

McAvoy has recently been playing for Team USA in the Four Nations Face-Off but was not in the lineup for the team’s game Monday night.

It’s unclear at this time how severe McAvoy’s injury is or when it occurred. According to Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub, sources familiar with the situation believe that McAvoy’s availability for the 4 Nations championship game on Thursday is in doubt.

“Charlie, obviously, is right now, he’s out with with an upper-body injury,” Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan said. “The same for Auston [Matthews]. He’s more banged up or nicked up I should say. We’ll probably have more information tomorrow with those guys.”

Along with McAvoy, Team USA was without several players as they fell 2-1 to Team Sweden at TD Garden, as both Matthews (soreness) and Matthew Tkachuk (lower body) missed the game as well. Brady Tkachuk started the game for the U.S. but only logged 1:55 of time on ice after he, too, suffered a lower-body injury and sat out the rest of the night after crashing into the net during the first period.

McAvoy had been playing well for Team USA prior to missing the game on Monday and was receiving high praise from many of his peers. It’ll be a major blow to the Americans if it’s determined that McAvoy is unavailable going forward, and even more so for the Bruins if he remains out beyond the conclusion of the 4 Nations tournament.

The defenseman has tallied 23 points with seven goals through 50 games for the Bruins this season while logging the most minutes of any skater on the team. McAvoy missed a seven-game stretch from Jan. 14-30 with an undisclosed injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Boston sits one point back of the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 27-24-6, and will resume its schedule Saturday night at home against the Anaheim Ducks.
