Bruins Sending Two Players Down To AHL Over Extended Break

As the NHL pauses its schedule for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off, many players across the league will get a much-needed break from hockey. Matthew Poitras and Michael Callahan will not.
The two will continue to play during the break after the Boston Bruins officially reassigned them to AHL Providence on Sunday morning. Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub was the first to report the move.
The decision to send the two youngsters down has nothing to do with their performance for the Bruins lately. Rather, it’s simply so they can continue playing during the extended two-week break.
When the Bruins do return to action, Poitras will likely rejoin them. He’s been one of their top players at generating offense since being called up in January, posting seven points in 12 games.
Callahan has also performed well when he’s had the chance to play on Boston’s blue line. He’s averaged 13:29 of ice time across eight games, mostly skating next to Brandon Carlo while often being matched up against the top lines of opposing teams.
However, Callahan’s return to the Bruins following the break is less certain, with defenseman Hampus Lindholm due to return from a lower-body injury that has kept him out since the middle of November.
Providence will play four games while the Bruins are on hiatus, starting with a home matchup against the Utica Comets this Friday.
The first game for the Bruins following the break will be on Saturday, Feb. 22, at TD Garden against the Anaheim Ducks. The team is expected to start practicing again on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
