BOSTON — Even though a recent report saying the Boston Bruins are an un-unified team was already deemed baseless, Trent Frederic completely dispelled it with just a few punches.

Frederic made a mess of Emil Lilleberg, landing a series of stiff shots on the Tampa Bay Lightning defense during a fight in the middle of the second period on Tuesday night at TD Garden.

Lilleberg entered the game a marked man after he injured Bruins forward Mark Kastelic when the two teams met last Thursday in Tampa by hitting him in the face with a stiff cross-check while there were only 2.5 seconds left in the game. Kastelic fought Lilleberg but was clearly dazed as he skated off the ice. He has since missed the last two games for the Bruins and is currently on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Kastelic’s teammates did not forget the image of him wobbling on his skates and made sure to seek out retribution by going after Lilleberg early and often on Tuesday, putting extra emphasis on each check they hit him with.

But no hit had more force behind it than the ones Frederic delivered with his fists.

“It followed the last time we played them,” Frederic said. “It all stems from that. I’m sticking up for my teammates.”

The Bruins already led 4-0 at the time of the fight, and it only added to their momentum as they won in decisive fashion 6-2.

“The way that they handled the end of the game when we were in Florida was unacceptable,” Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman said.  “Our guys stepped up, and we made a statement tonight. That’s a good feeling as a group, coming together and getting the job done the right way and the respectful way.”

Frederic was an assist away from recording the second Gordie Howe hat trick of his career in the victory. His seventh of the season put the Bruins on the board at 4:22 of the first period, as the returning Matthew Poitras set him up at the backdoor off a two-on-one odd-man rush.

“Potsy kind of did it all,” said Frederic. “I was just the guy who finished it.”
