The Boston Bruins continue to fortify their defensive depth.

Boston reached agreements with defenders Michael Callahan and Alec Regula on Friday morning, re-signing the restricted free agents to matching one-year, two-way deals that will pay them $775,000 at the NHL level.

Callahan, 24, skated in 70 games for the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence in 2023-24, recording 17 points with four goals and 13 assists. The Bruins first acquired the Franklin, MA native in a February 2022 trade with the Arizona Coyotes, sending a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft the other way.  In 140 AHL games, all with Providence, Callahan has scored 27 points with six goals and 21 points.

Regula, 23, played in 55 games for Providence last season, tallying 26 points with four goals and 22 assists. He joined the Bruins as part of the return the organization received from the Chicago Blackhawks for Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno last summer. He has since yet to play for the Bruins, but did appear in 22 NHL games for the Blackhawks across three seasons from 2020-23. In 163 career AHL games split between Providence and the Rockford Ice Hogs, Regula has recorded 77 points with 11 goals and 66 helpers.

After re-signing Callahan and Regula, as well as fellow defender Ian Mitchell, earlier this summer, the Bruins have brought back the defensive depth that they hope not to use this upcoming year but will surely be helpful to have if needed.

As for Boston’s remaining restricted free agents, goalie Jeremey Swayman and forward Marc McLaughlin are still without contracts. The Bruins placed qualifying offers on both players prior to the start of free agency.

The Bruins have had a busy summer, checking many, but not all, of the items off their to-do list, and the re-signings of Callahan and Regula serve as the latest examples.

But until Swayman and, to a much lesser degree, McLaughlin are under contract, the Bruins’ work this summer is not done.
