Boston Bruins Still Among ‘Primary Suitors’ For Chychrun

Published

on

The Boston Bruins remain in the hunt for Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun as one of the “primary suitors”, but they are far from alone in that category. And that represents the rub for a Bruins organization that might not be able to match assets with so many other serious suitors for Chychrun that include Carolina, St. Louis, Anaheim, Los Angeles and Florida when push comes shove at the deadline, per TSN Insider Darren Dreger on the Insider Trading segment.

“At this point eight teams are seriously in the chase for Jakob Chychrun,” said Dreger. “But based on the mount that Bill Armstrong and the Arizona Coyotes need in order to move the 23-year-old defenseman that this could come right down to the deadline of March 21 based on the package required.”

It’s no secret the Boston Bruins have been in the running for Chychrun from the very beginning given their need for a legit top pairing left-shot defenseman that can upgrade a left side of Mike Reilly, Matt Grzelcyk and Derek Forbort that’s adequate at best for most of the season. That’s been underscored recently as Bruins shutdown defenseman Derek Forbort has been on the ice for three late third period goals against the B’s in the last couple of weeks.

The issue is cost for Chychrun as it was assumed that Jeremy Swayman might be asked about in any deal with Arizona, and it would undoubtedly cost an Eichel-like package of at the very least first round pick, top prospect and NHL player like Urho Vaakanainen to replace Chychrun on the Arizona roster. One would expect that both Swayman and 2021 first round pick Fabian Lysell would be off the table, though, as the Boston Bruins attempt at rebuilding their draft-and-development system with an influx of talent and prospects.
