NHL Trade

The NHL trade market is picking up and the Dallas Stars are ramping up their efforts to trade defenseman John Klingberg who requested a trade back in late November.

According to an NHL source with direct knowledge of the situation, the Boston Bruins are one of the numerous teams who had already inquired with Stars general manager Jim Nill when the Klingberg trade request went public earlier this month. Klingberg is in the final season of a seven-year contract that carries a $4.2 million cap hit. So what would the Bruins have to give to acquire the 29-year-old defenseman on the NHL trade market?

“Big. At least three components. Top-end stuff,” the aforementioned source told Boston Hockey Now.

On the latest 32 Thoughts segment on Sportsnet Hockey Night In Canada, NHL insider Jeff Marek reported that based on what he’s been told, the Stars want to find a dance partner for Klingberg on the NHL trade market ASAP.

“The saga continues and last week we talked about the trade request from Klingberg that goes back to late November, or early December,” Marek pointed out Saturday night. “He offered up comments last week as well, saying at times he felt he wasn’t appreciated by the Dallas Stars. Dallas is playing Tampa [Saturday] and John Klingberg now finds himself on the third pairing. Not a great situation for Klingberg and we can report that the Dallas Stars have stepped up their efforts to trade John Klingberg. We believe very much he is getting dealt; hard to say exactly when but Dallas does seem aggressive, wanting to get something done soonish.”

Klingberg is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound, right-shot defenseman who has one goal and 16 assists in 30 games this season. His best season was in 2017-18 when had 59 assists and 67 points in 82 games.

Klingberg isn’t the only high-end defenseman available on the NHL trade market right now. The Arizona Coyotes let it be known to potential NHL trade suitors back in December that 23-year-old defenseman Jakob Chychrun is available. As my BHN partner-in-scribe, Joe Haggerty pointed out though when that news broke, the price for Chychrun is even higher and the Bruins likely don’t have the goods in their pipeline to get a trade for Chychrun done.
