BHN Puck Links: Fenway Sports Group Buying Pittsburgh Penguins?
Of all the NHL teams that might be up for sale, I wouldn’t have guessed that the Pittsburgh Penguins were about to change hands.
But per multiple reports, the Fenway Sports Group, AKA John Henry, are in talks to purchase the Penguins from Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle to add to their portfolio that includes the Red Sox, Liverpool FC. FOH (Friend of Haggs) Dan Kingerski has all the details here and it’s unclear what kind of synergy would be created between the Red Sox and Penguins with the Boston Bruins right in the ownership group’s backyard.
But it could make things very awkward for the Red Sox if/when the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins meet in the Stanley Cup playoffs moving forward.
Now on to the BHN Puck Links:
*Charlie McAvoy is obviously already a Norris Trophy candidate and a No. 1 defenseman on a good hockey team. But his recent offensive outburst has him ascending to that final level of elite NHL defenseman. (Boston Hockey Now)
*Kevin Labanc has been put on notice that he needs to start playing better or he won’t be in the San Jose Sharks lineup much longer. (San Jose Hockey Now)
*What in the wide world of sports is going on with the Vancouver Canucks and some seriously bad hockey that they’re playing. FOH Rob Simpson has the lowdown. (Vancouver Hockey Now)
*It sounds like the Vegas Golden Knights are suffering through a bit of a COVID outbreak with Jonathan Marchessault put in the league’s COVID protocol. (Vegas Hockey Now)
*JT Compher is going to miss a month for the Colorado Avalanche. That’s a tough break for one of the character players on the Avs. (Colorado Hockey Now)
*Shawn Thornton apparently knows Tuukka Rask’s future plans for the NHL but isn’t spilling the beans. (CBS 4 Boston)
*Dion Phaneuf officially announces his retirement and tells Steve Simmons that he regrets striking back at the Maple Leafs fans in Toronto. (Toronto Sun)
*Tim Peel is guaranteeing that PK Subban isn’t trying to hurt anybody with his handful of slewfoots this season. Yeah, okay.
I can unequivocally say that PK Subban is not a dirty player. I talked to PK and he told me this is just a bad habit that has crept into his game. I refereed him and I know him personally and I can guarantee he is not trying to intentionally hurt any player. @PKSubban1 @DFOHockey https://t.co/h76lAX0ESe

*For something completely different: Miramax is suing Quentin Tarantino. Didn’t he basically make Miramax? (Variety)
