BHN Daily: A Week From The NHL Trade Deadline, Rumors Are Swirling

Published

on

Let the peak of NHL Trade rumor season begin!

The NHL Trade Deadline is a week from Monday and while the action hasn’t picked up on the NHL Trade market, the chatter sure picked up this Easter weekend. From the reigning Jennings Trophy winners, the Boston Bruins contemplating adding a goalie to the Toronto Maple Leafs acting like they don’t need goaltending depth, it’s time to decipher what’s real and what’s not a week from the NHL Trade Deadline.

More on that and more NHL Trade buzz in your BHN Daily Links:

Make no doubt about it, whether Tuukka Rask is between the pipes tonight or tomorrow, there has been ‘considerable concern’ within the Boston Bruins coaching staff and brass that he wouldn’t be back at all this season. That’s why according to multiple NHL sources, the Bruins aren’t taking chances. (Boston Hockey Now)

Could the Philadelphia Flyers, the team the Bruins are set to play tonight in Boston and tomorrow in Philadelphia, be ready to make a ‘statement trade’ to change the suddenly dire situation they find themselves in? (Off The Record)

Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney is on the hot seat and the sharks are circling, reminding him of what will go down as his biggest blunder, the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. From Hall of Fame hockey scribe Larry Brooks:

‘Again, I ask somewhat incredulously: The same people who passed three times on Mathew Barzal in the 2015 draft are still making the decisions for the Bruins?’

Ouch! That and more in his always must-read weekly column. (NY Post)

Could the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs end up in a bubble just as the 2020 run to Lord Stanley did? Apparently too many NHL players are starting to get too lax when it comes to NHL COVID protocol. (Sportsnet)

The 2021 Oscars are on April 25. Did Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby earn his nomination this past Saturday? (Boston Hockey Now)

Beware of the Panthers! They’re getting healthy again. (Florida Hockey Now)

With a week of NHL Trade Rumors about to swirl even more Murph’s Music Pick Of The Day gives ya a one-hit wonder!

With 20 years of experience (SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, ESPNBoston, NESN, NHL.com, etc.) covering the Bruins, the NHL, NCAA and junior hockey and more, Jimmy Murphy’s hockey black book is full of Hall of Famers, current players, coaches, management, scouts and a wide array of hockey media personalities that have lived in and around this great game. For 17 of his 20 years as a hockey and sports reporter, Murph covered the Bruins on essentially a daily basis covering their victorious 2011 Stanley Cup run and their 2013 run to the Final as well. Murphy has hosted national and local radio shows and podcasts and also has experience in TV as well.

I just wish they’d fire Sweeney’s and Neely’s sorry carcasses out of Beantown for good! The worst gm and President of all time. The 2015 draft would have gotten most gm’s fired within a few days but, some of his other blunders? His trade record is one of the worst in the history of the franchise.ex; giving up a number one pick for that dud Kase. I get ill thinking about that. There are so many more almost moronic moves. Even if the bruins gave up the majority of the team for number one draft picks on rebuild I wouldn’t… Read more »

Don Sweeney is Trash

Bruins gave up the first round pick in order to dump David backes salary but everything you said is true. Not to mention that albatross of a contract was Don Sweeney‘s fault all along. He’s brutal, and his horrible drafting absolutely was the X factor in putting them in this situation. He should be fired. The team is not a real contender right now but if Don Sweeney wants to save his head he should at least go out and get a solid scorer without giving up everything he has. If you have to add in like five different places… Read more »

Bruins fan

Yes don’t forget about all those bad contracts Sweeney gave out like Backes $7 million and Moore’s $ 2.3 million.

danny

Everyone liked the Backes deal when it was made. It turned out we were all wrong This has been probably the worst yr ever to bring in young talent not enough practice time. If not for Sweeney you Don’t have McA or Griz His predecessor spent very little time Scouting American College Players. the only one he brought in was Tory Krug He had all that talent right under his nose, he wasn’t even looking at them

Don Sweeney is Trash

Ok Sweeney defenders, downvote my comment. Won’t fix the fact the Bruins have ZERO legitimate trade assets because of your “GM of the year”. Good luck!

Orrfan

Not sure securing another goalie is a priority for the Bruins, if Rask is about to come back. Nor is the blueline, once the Bruins defense is finally healthy. Lauzon has had a hard time coming back from injury. But that’s natural for a guy who has exceeded expectations, and will need to be back to full form before he competes at a physical level we’ve come to expect. Despite the obvious revelation separating the “perfection line” has finally been, the Bruins could definitely do with a proven scorer like Kyle Palmeiri. With an “A” on his jersey, Palmeiri might… Read more »

So you want to fire guys who have brought Boston a Cup and produced a perenial contender!!

You talk about 1 guy they passed over for the 3 draft choices they made who are now all apart of the team. What about the guys drafted ahead that are not doing anything in NHL? Let’s talk about them.

How about the successful draft choices they have made, that are key cogs on the team and its future?

I know dirty laundry sells, but please be a bit more accurate in your reporting!

MorphinePRN

Agreed.

Whatever

Shows how much you know lol. Explain how Don Sweeney “brought them a cup” 4 and a half years before he was hired as the general manager of the Boston Bruins? Yeah I know he worked in player development don’t give me that nonsense. Lol. Perennial contender. Don Sweeney did nothing to build that team

Whatever

Also I would love for you to point out a couple of the “successful draft choices” Don Sweeney has made that have vastly improved this team and not just kept them afloat in a fringe NHL role. Sorry bud but Trent Frederic is not a first round talent, no matter how entertaining he is. Brandon Carlo? That’s his home run? Once in a while with a first second or third round pick you’re going to draft a player that isn’t trash. Congratulations. I’m not sure if people realize that most of the decent players that became a part of the… Read more »

McAvoy was a really big homerun, but that’s about it.

Andy

Well, actually they passed over a bunch of guys in that draft. Sure, there was Barzal, but there was Kyle Connor, Brock Boesser, Thomas Chabot, Travis Koneckny (I think). I think I’m forgetting someone but can’t remember who. So he really screwed up in that draft and it’s come back to haunt them in a pretty big way.

MorphinePRN

Just Bc they passed on BARZAL doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are doing. 12 other teams passed on barzal also. I’m an isles fan and everyone knows the draft is a crap shoot. Bergeron/Krejci they had. Some u can’t blame the bruins for not taking a center.

danny

I want Swayman, what more does he have to prove in AHL where he has been dominant? He was selected the best G.T in the Country has last year at UMaine,he has swelled up everything that’s been thrown at him in Providence. He is 22 yrs old, what more does he need to show.

danny

I meant of course Swallowed up, not swelled up

Charley

I love these supporters of Bruins management. If it’s wasn’t for Patrice doing what he does, Bruins brass would be looking bad every year
