BHN Daily: The Only ‘Joke’ Is The Capitals & Their Headhunting
So, Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin thinks it’s “kind of a joke” that Tom Wilson was suspended for seven games for his predatory head shot on Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo?
Alex Ovechkin describes Tom Wilson getting a seven-game suspension for boarding Boston’s Brandon Carlo as “kind of a joke.”
Ovechkin agreed with the call on the ice. Didn’t think the hit even warranted two minutes.

It’s little surprise that Wilson continues to make the same reckless mistakes over and over again when he’s got a captain on his team in Ovie that clearly doesn’t get it, and an enabler in head coach Peter Laviolette making excuses for him as well. The “all hitting is going to have to be removed” from hockey because Tom Wilson was suspended is the kind of eyeroll material that’s been coming from Wilson’s coaches for his entire career, and it’s not doing him any favors.
Peter Laviolette said he’s “hopeful” Tom Wilson will be available Sunday vs PHI. No word yet on when his hearing will be.
Laviolette said the hit on Carlo was a “hockey hit” and if that was a “suspendable play then all hitting really is going to probably have to be removed.” pic.twitter.com/b6hQmrN98u

Other players have learned to change their games over the year once they were under the league microscope, and there might not be a better example in recently memory than Brad Marchand, as noted by my partner-in-crime Jimmy Murphy in a great column this weekend.
Until Wilson starts to smarten up and is part of an organization that actually makes him accountable for the terrible stuff he’s doing on the ice, then we’ll see the Capitals cheap shot artist keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Some would call that hockey insanity, but Washington proudly calls it Capitals hockey.
Yeah, that’s nothing to be proud of. The only “joke” is the Washington Capitals and their headhunting ways that are a disgrace.
Now on to the BHN puck links:
*Speaking of Murph, he’s got the inside scoop on trade developments for Jack Eichel, Jake DeBrusk and Sam Bennett in his OTR column for this week. (Boston Hockey Now)
*A cool story by NBC about how the organization “Breaking the Barriers” is growing the game of hockey in the Buffalo area.
To further the growth of hockey, the game must be open and available to everyone.

*Sad, sad story as one of the players on the 1980 Miracle team, 63-year-old Mark Pavelich, was found dead this weekend. (ESPN.com)
*Another sad passing this weekend as Walter Gretzky, the ultimate hockey dad, has passed away. Mark Messier joined TSN to talk about Mr. Gretzky and his impact on those Edmonton Oilers team that formed a dynasty in the mid-1980’s. (TSN)
*I’ve always got time for Jackie Redmond and here hot takes around the NHL.
“I do not subscribe” is my new favourite saying. 😂

*Brandon Carlo is “feeling better” and that’s great news after getting Tom Wilson went head-hunting on him Friday night. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be returning to the Bruins anytime soon. (Boston Hockey Now)
*This sweet, sweet Mat Barzal between-the-legs highlight reel goal is probably going to make a lot of Bruins fans angry as it should. That dude has skills to pay the bills. (NYI Hockey Now)
*For something completely different: I saw Coming 2 America this weekend. I thought it was fine and it had some really sweet, heartwarming moments with the original characters in a loving tribute, but it wasn’t nearly as funny or entertaining as the first one. That’s a tough first act to live up to, but it was worth watching if you loved the original like I did. Here’s Eddie Murphy talking about the degree of difficulty of pulling off his comedy.
“There was a scene in DREAMGIRLS where I was about to shoot some drugs…All they wrote about was ‘When he gave him that look!’…Did you see in NUTTY PROFESSOR where I was the whole table? That was so much harder than that look.”
